Decorating with Family Photos
Family photos not only brighten up a room, but they connect us to our past. They can be a conversation starter when a new friend stops by. And they are inexpensive way to decorate. Whether you rent or own, you can easily display family photos without putting a hole in the wall.
In the digital age, we can purchase frames that turn our digital images into a slide show. You can update the pictures to coordinate with the season. Imagine showing every single Halloween costume you’ve ever worn? Ok, maybe you don’t want some of those, but it can be fun to reminisce over the memories of Halloween parties of times past.
The frugal homemaker had a great series of articles on home decorating on a budget. On day 14 of 31, she talked about decorating with family photos. She had some great style tips to keep in mind:
Black and white pictures or color? Choose what you like best and do all the photos the same.
Have a mat in your frame or not? – most should be the same, but maybe one or two pictures could be different.
Frames – all matching or not? Depending on the look you want, you might want all identical frames, or just all frames in the same color but different sizes/styles, or an eclectic mix of lots of styles and colors.
On a ledge or hung on the wall? Again your choice and you might be able to combine the two.
Some other ideas to keep in mind are the size of the room. If you have large pictures in a small area, it might overwhelm, and tiny pictures in a large wall can get lost.
There are other methods of displaying photographs in addition to the standard frame. There are cork boards with ribbons where you can tuck the photograph into the ribbon creating a collage appearance. You can tape or glue the photographs onto something else like an old box and hang that to create a scrapbook look.
Will you be adding in more photos to your home decor or finding crafty ways of displaying them?
